Practice Plan – Week 1 of 8

| 3-5 min | 1 | This is mostly just a time to connect with parents and to answer questions or to clarify anything about practices. Make sure you convey excitement that they are there. | It’s critical to see how things are going with mom and dad so talk with them as they enter the gym. |
| 15 min | 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 | Everyone needs to know the basics of how to handle and protect the ball while dribbling. 1 ball is good but with 2 balls you can’t hide your weak hand. These are excellent drills and you will see improvement by the time you are done on day one. | Be verbally encouraging at all times. YOU are their biggest fan of support! Most players have never done these drills so they may get frustrated. |
| 20 min | 18, 19, 20 | It’s important to stress proper technique when it comes to passing and catching. When catching always have the players moving toward the ball with their head and eyes up and two hands ready at chin height. | Keep them focused and alert. Challenge your players to do it the right way every time. |
| 5 min | 2 | Practice 2 Foot Jump Stop without a ball. Emphasize proper technique. At each stop check stance – hands up, tail down, knees bent and eyes straight ahead. | Don’t have them move to the next line until everyone is in proper form. |

| 10 min | 23 | Introduce this drill slowly. Explain the cones are there to help with spacing and to show cutting angles. You are teaching the wings to run the floor wide and to cut at good angles. You are teaching the dribbler (point) that they need to call for the outlet and you are teaching them how they are to attack the elbow, making a good 2 Foot Jump Stop, followed with a pass to the ball side wing. For the first 5 minutes have the point attack the right elbow dribbling with their right hand. Switch after 5 minutes and have the point attack the left elbow dribbling with their left hand. | Partners take turns switching spots so they can get skilled in both the attacking and wing positions. |

| 15 min | 34 | 5 on 5 shell drill. Have players rotate off after they have cycled through all defensive positions. Don’t worry about individual technique but concentrate on team rotation and all 5 defenders seeing the ball. They need to understand the team help concept..
Offense passes the ball to all 5 offensive positions allowing the defense to get set before making the next pass |
When cycled all the way through have all defenders rotate one position (corner guy goes off and a new defender comes on) |
| 10 min | 31, 32, 33 | Concentrate on proper technique of feet, hands, eyes on ball, and proper sliding. No bouncing! Point the front toe in the direction they are moving. Heals don’t touch or cross, arms need to be out to the sides at shoulder height with eyes up. | Be a good teacher here and be encouraging and don’t relax on the technique. |
